One of Beacon’s senior software developers has wowed judges and potential investors at the Microsoft Bizspark Azure Startup Camp by coming up with the best of five competing teams’ ideas for developing a commercially viable application using the Windows Azure cloud computing platform.

The winning application greatly enhances users’ experience of one of the most popular activities in Australia. It is intelligently designed, easily scalable, and will be developed for both the Internet and mobile platforms.

Beacon is happy to encourage and support our developers in such innovative ventures. Three members of Beacon’s software development team attended the Azure platform briefing, and our senior developer had Saturday morning till Sunday afternoon to write the code before presenting a 10-minute pitch to judges.

Since hearing the great news, Beacon has started to delve further into the ways our team can support this exciting initiative to fruition while respecting intellectual property rights.

Clients who would like to develop similar leading-edge ideas to strengthen their marketing or other business strategies are welcome to contact Beacon to explore possibilities.

Perth’s .NET community gathered for a friendly competition at the annual DevJam event organised by the Perth .NET User Group on Thursday 2nd December 2010.

The presenters shared their expertise and experience on these topics:

Using SpecFlow and WatiN

Dynamic UI in WinForms

Rx – Reactive Framework

A simple approach to test your data driven applications

NuGet: The caramel goodness of open source in your projects

Asynchronous programming in .NET 5

Ditching BizTalk for NServiceBus

WPF: Design Data

Beacon’s strong industry support for knowledge sharing in the Perth .NET community is demonstrated by the fact that four of the eight presenters are Beacon employees.

All presenters were informative and entertaining, and that made it hard for their peers in the audience to judge which presentations were the best. All Beacon team members did us proud, and two of them snared some fantastic prizes.

Adrian won first place in the DevJam sharing his expertise on WPF: Design Data in a characteristically entertaining manner. He walked away with a raft of early Christmas presents: the Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate with MSDN subscription alone is valued at $12,000, and he also received a Windows 7 Ultimate OS, licences for LinqPad, BeyondCompare and Camtasia Studio, a Mindscape pack with a 12-month subscription, RedGate .NET Reflector Pro, a TekPub voucher and a T-shirt.

Michael won third place for his engaging presentation on Dynamic UI in Winforms. “Not bad for ten minutes’ work,” remarked Michael, whose prizes included a Windows 7 Ultimate OS, licences for LinqPad, DevExpress DXExperience and SmartInspect, a TekPub voucher and a T-shirt.

In addition, Darren spoke about Asynchronous programming in .NET 5, and Piers spent his ten-minute presentation on the topic of Rx – Reactive Framework.

The Perth .NET User Group, run by Microsoft MVP and Beacon team member Mitch Wheat, welcomes everyone in the .NET community to join their monthly meetups, and have a go at the DevJam next year. Find out more about this year’s event here.
